I see what you mean about the mind boggling number of people killed. It’s a wonder there are any of us left!
The one about women not being given pain killers during childbirth was true here in the UK as well – until Queen Victoria had chloroform, which she found delightful. After that everyone wanted it.
That’s true I mentioned that in my lecture about her children (I reckoned she was the mother from hell) – but for her first birth she was aware that half the privy chamber were in the next room and was terrified she would cry out in pain and lose her dignity. She hated babies and called them little frogs 🙂
