i just had to share this since history is ‘my thing’ and my blog only tells lies – these are the true facts!

This is my favorite list of the day so I saved it for last.  The number of people killed is mind boggling.  Read the original Buzzfeed post here.

1. The Ottoman Empire’s Sultan Ibrahim I had 280 of his concubines drowned in the ocean after one of them slept with another man.

2. In medieval times people were put to death for being witches. One anthropologist conjectures as many as 600,000 “witches” lost their lives.

3. Mexican General Santa Anna had an elaborate state funeral for his amputated leg.

4. Tens of thousands of baby girls were abandoned each year in China because of the country’s one-child policy.

5. Before the mid-19th century dentures were commonly made with teeth pulled from the mouths of dead soldiers.

  1. I see what you mean about the mind boggling number of people killed. It’s a wonder there are any of us left!
    The one about women not being given pain killers during childbirth was true here in the UK as well – until Queen Victoria had chloroform, which she found delightful. After that everyone wanted it.

    • That’s true I mentioned that in my lecture about her children (I reckoned she was the mother from hell) – but for her first birth she was aware that half the privy chamber were in the next room and was terrified she would cry out in pain and lose her dignity. She hated babies and called them little frogs 🙂
